Ninety-nine percent of people aren’t willing to do what’s necessary to make their dreams come true. Marine soldiers say, “Everyone wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die.” The key to achieving any dream is self-discipline. Something as simple as diet and food isn’t about your body; it’s about your mind. It’s about having control over your mind to choose actions that benefit you. Every day, we choose crap that doesn’t benefit us. So, if the world attacks you, if it fights against you, if it tries to restrict you, will you give in? Will you stop yourself from achieving your dreams?

And I think the word “discipline” has acquired a bad reputation. We think of it in terms of punishment. I don’t mean discipline in that sense. I mean discipline in the sense that you sacrifice immediate pleasure for long-term self-respect. I believe self-discipline is the definition of self-love. When you say you love yourself, it means you behave in a way that shows love for yourself.

Self-discipline is the key to all success. You won’t win the war against the world if you can’t win the war against your own mind. Self-love manifests when you tell yourself: “Hey man, look… I know you and that girl have a good connection, and I know you like her, but… she’s your girlfriend’s cousin, and I love you too much to let you do that.” When you tell yourself: “I know you want to eat that pizza, and it will taste really good, but I can’t allow you to eat it because if you eat that pizza, you’ll feel horrible, and I love you too much to let you eat it.”

Self-love is: “Hey, look… I know you have an exam on Monday, and I know you want to go out with your friends. It’s Saturday, and you want to go out, but if you fail that exam, you won’t feel good. I love you too much to let you go out tonight.” Self-discipline is self-love. If you want to be happy, you have to love yourself. Which means you have to be disciplined. The path to permanent happiness is discipline.

We tend to base our self-esteem on what others think. And that’s not true self-esteem.

Taking Responsibility for Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is about how we feel about ourselves. And it’s dangerous to let other people determine how we feel about ourselves. It’s like looking through a broken mirror. You’ll look at yourself through that broken and dirty mirror and want to change your face to look good in that broken mirror. Other people’s opinions are a crappy way to determine how we feel about ourselves. No matter whose fault it is that something is broken, it’s your responsibility to fix it.

For example, it’s not someone’s fault that their father was an abusive alcoholic, but it’s their responsibility to learn to deal with those traumas and build a life despite it all. It’s not your fault if your partner cheated on you and ruined your marriage, but it’s your responsibility to find a way to take that pain and overcome it and build a happy life. Guilt and responsibility don’t go together. It sucks, but that’s how it is. When someone is guilty, we want them to suffer. We want to punish them. We want them to pay. Let it be their responsibility to fix it. But that’s not how it works. Especially when it comes to your heart.

Your heart, your life, your happiness, is your responsibility alone. As long as we’re pointing fingers at others, stuck in finding blame, we’ll be stuck in the victim role. When you’re stuck in that role, you’re stuck in suffering. The path to power is to take responsibility. Your heart, your life, your happiness, is your responsibility alone.

Building Meaningful Connections

You can make a person smile, make them feel good, you can make them laugh, but that person’s happiness is entirely out of your hands. The requirement to spend time with anyone is that they feed you and inspire you. That they increase your flame. Look at your last 5 messages, are they from people who increase your flame? Or extinguish it? Put your phone down for a second and look around you. Look at those around you. Are they adding wood to your fire? Or are they peeing on it?

You say, “I’m going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid.” You do that every single day, and soon you have a wall. And I think psychologically, the advantage that gives me over many people I have competed with in various situations is that it’s hard to take that first step when you see the magnitude of the task.

The definition of who I am has become very clear to me. And it also redefines who I want to be. That I know for certain that I’m stronger than I thought. You can’t help but wonder, “What would I do if I were in Muhammad Ali’s place?” Fear motivates me. I hate being afraid to do something. I think what I developed in my youth was the attitude to attack the things I feared.

Confronting Fear

Why were you scared last night in your bed? What do you need that fear for? Don’t go! Why were you scared in your bed 16 hours before you jumped? Why were you scared in the car? Why didn’t you enjoy breakfast? Fear… Fear of what?! You’re not even near the plane. Until it arrives, there’s no reason to fear. It just ruins your day. You don’t have to jump. And at that moment when you should feel terror, you experience the most beautiful feeling of your life. And God put the best things in life on the other side of terror.
