  2. Understand that a clear purpose provides motivation and drive to overcome obstacles and challenges.
  3. Acknowledge that every individual is inherently designed for success but may be programmed for failure due to seeking shortcuts and easy paths in life.

Step 2: Recognizing the Mechanisms of Success and Failure

Description:

This step delves into the internal mechanisms of success and failure present within individuals.

Implementation:

  1. Understand that humans possess both a mechanism for success and a mechanism for failure inherently.
  2. Acknowledge that the mechanism for failure tends to be automatically and continuously activated, contributing to the prevalence of failure in society.
  3. Recognize that the mechanism for success is triggered by setting clear goals and objectives.

Specific Details:

  • Consider how the mechanism for failure operates on autopilot, often leading individuals towards paths of least resistance.

Principle of Purpose and Goal Setting

The first great principle of success in life is the principle of purpose, and the establishment of a clear central purpose or goal is the starting point of all success. In all the studies we’ve read in previous videos and all the studies of self-made millionaires, athletes, and high-performing Olympic men and women, we find that their superior trajectory in life begins with the establishment of a clear central purpose – something they want to do with burning desire, something so important to them that they develop the motivation and drive to overcome all resistance.

Each of us is designed for success. Since we are built as a result of millions of years of evolution, we have a mind that is so complex and wonderful that it can do things no human computer will ever be able to do. We are designed to achieve great success in our lives. However, we are programmed for failure in the sense that we continually seek the quick and easy path through life. This path inevitably ends in failures and low performance, making the quick and easy acquisition of things inevitably lead to secondary consequences that are much worse than we had anticipated.

It’s as if we have a mechanism for success and a mechanism for failure built into us. The failure mechanism is activated automatically and continuously, which explains why most people fail because they are programmed to fail. However, your success mechanism is activated or triggered by a goal. As soon as you set a goal, something you really desire, you override your failure mechanism. You begin to free yourself from the gravitational pull of failure.

Now, this is crucial. You’ll spin in circles or drift like a rudderless boat back and forth with the tide, or you’ll go through life’s journey like a car without a steering wheel until you set a goal. Once you decide on a goal, everything else will change for you. Decision is crucial. All winners are decisive, and all losers are indecisive. You must make a clear decision about what you really want in life. Having a plan without thinking means planning to fail. Your subconscious mind is activated by a goal.

Cybernetic Goal-Seeking Function

When you decide on a clear purpose for your life, you activate a cybernetic goal-seeking function in your brain that begins to move you towards it and it towards you. A good friend of mine told me that there are only two creatures in the universe that have this particular function. The other creature is the homing pigeon. You can take a homing pigeon, put it in a box, cover it with a blanket, put it in a sealed truck, and drive it a thousand miles. Then, open the truck, remove the blanket, open the box, open the cage, and release the homing pigeon into the sky. The homing pigeon will take three turns and then head straight home in the right direction. Your brain has the same mechanism. That is, when you program a goal into your brain, you immediately establish a type of vibration that emanates from you and begins to bring into your life the people, circumstances, and opportunities that enable you to achieve it. But if you don’t have a clear goal or a set of goals and if you don’t have plans to work towards those goals, then this mechanism doesn’t work at all. It remains dormant within your brain. If you understand this fundamental principle, any average person with average talents, skills, and education can surpass the brightest genius in our society if that average person has clear and focused goals. That’s why you see men and women who start virtually from nothing and make wonderful progress in their lives, and it’s almost invariably that you see it starting with a goal. Some people don’t set a goal until they’re 30, others at 40, others until they’re 50, and some people never do. But it’s important to understand this: without goals, you are forever doomed to work for people who have them. I’m not saying this is easy. Making decisions and setting goals is hard work, and that’s why only winners have goals. Losers are lazy. They won’t take the time and effort to think about what they really want and then make plans for their achievement. Now, what do you want? Have you ever decided that? Exactly what is it that you want? How much do you want to earn? Have you decided how much you want to earn this year, next year, within five years, or 10 years from now? And I say this for you to analyze yourself and ask yourself this basic question.

Knowing What You Want

Do you know what you want in life if I asked you right now? What do you really want? What are the tangible objects you want in this world, the things you can feel, touch, and smell? What are those things you want in life? The incredible thing is that I doubt there’s 2% of the people listening to this video who can tell me and describe it. We receive many things from people who know what they want. That’s why we don’t get the things we haven’t defined. We don’t know exactly what we want. Remember, you can have whatever you want if you can define it clearly. Where do you want to be in one, three, or five years? Where do you want to be next year and the year after that? What kind of progress do you want to make? What kind of lifestyle do you want to have? What level of health do you want to have? And what kind of relationships do you want to have? Think about how much you want these things because this will determine whether you achieve them or not. Do you desire them enough? The keyword for success is hunger. How hungry are you? Complacency is a terrible enemy. Complacency is the comfort zone, selling ourselves short, settling for less terrible enemies.

Have you heard the famous story of Socrates? When he was the foremost philosopher in Athens, people came to him to study philosophy. Socrates had what is called the peripatetic school. It was the first school where people actually walked; it didn’t have a building. They walked, talked, and philosophized, asking questions. People would come and say, “I’d like to study philosophy,” which was a fairly new field. One day, a young man approached him and said, “I want to be a philosopher. What do I have to do to be a philosopher? Please tell me.” Well, Socrates said, “Are you sure you want to be a philosopher? It takes many years of thinking, and it doesn’t pay well.” The young man said, “Yes, I know I want to be a philosopher.” So, Socrates took him and said, “Come with me; I want to show you something.” They started walking by a lake; he took the young man by the arm. Socrates was a very strong man. “Are you sure you want to be a philosopher?” “Yes,” said the young man. They waded into the water, getting deeper and deeper. When the water was up to their chests, Socrates suddenly dunked the young man’s head underwater and held him there. The young man thought, “Well, this must be something that’s done,” so he didn’t struggle or anything. Then Socrates held him there. The young man realized he wasn’t going to let go and started to panic, thrashing and kicking, becoming absolutely petrified and terrified. Finally, at the last moment, Socrates pulled him out of the water and said, “What were you thinking just now?” He said, “I was thinking about oxygen. All I was thinking about was breathing.” “When you want philosophy as much as you wanted oxygen just now, then you’ll be a philosopher. When you want your goals in the same way, when you want them as much, that’s all you think about. You think about achieving just that goal. When you desire it so much, you will achieve it; nothing will stop you. You see, you can have anything you want in life if you want it enough and are willing to pay the price.”

Now, the rules regarding the price of success are simple. There are only two of them. The number one is that you always have to pay the full price of success, and number two is that you always have to pay in advance. Now, here are some key points about goals, and please remember them or watch this video several times. The first key point is that your ability to set goals and make plans to achieve them is the master skill of success. Developing this skill requires continuous practice and serious personal work, something that only the top 5% will discipline themselves to do. Setting goals is difficult; setting goals requires delaying gratification. Setting goals means taking some time aside, sitting down, and really thinking about what you want in every area of your life. Because this is hard, most people won’t do it. The second key point is that your goals must be congruent with your core values. Your self-esteem comes from engaging in activities and working to achieve goals that are consistent with what you believe is good, right, and important. Take some time to think about what you believe and then structure your goals in harmony with your deepest convictions. What are your core values in life? What would you live for? What would you fight for? What would you sacrifice for? What would you die for? What are the most important things to you in life, and how suitable are your goals? Are your daily activities consistent with those values? One thing I discovered when I was younger is that sometimes I was in a job I hated, yet everyone around me thought it was a great job. The reason for that, as I found out, was that for them and their values, it was the ideal job.

Aligning Goals with Values

But for me, in many cases, for you, your values, it was the wrong job. We’ll talk about this a bit later, but if you’re not happy or content with your job, if you’re not excited or satisfied, then you should leave it, and you should get out of there quickly because the surest way to fail in life is to stay in a job where you are not suited or is inconsistent with your core values.

Now, one of the things we know about high-performance men and women is that they have very clear beliefs, and one of the things we know about low performers and failures is that they are very vague about what they believe because when you know what your values are, it’s quite easy for you to make critical decisions in your life. But if you don’t know what your values are or if you’ve never taken the time to think about them, then you will be carried away by the wind, you will go in the direction it blows in almost any decision area.

The third point in goal setting is that you must have an important and defined purpose, a goal that is more important than any other. You can have many different goals, but you must have one goal that must be number one. Many people ask me this question, they say, “Bryan, can I have two big defined purposes?” and the answer to that is no. There’s a line in the Bible that says a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways, which means if you’re trying to do two things at once or if you have two goals with the same priority, you’ll end up not being able to do it well. The way you choose your main defined purpose is that once you’ve listed all your goals, you ask yourself, “Which is the one goal on this list whose achievement would most quickly lead me to the achievement of all my other goals?” Choose one goal. When we’re younger, our goals are often financial, sometimes they have to do with our careers, and sometimes they have to do with health or our relationships. But whatever goal has the greatest positive impact on all other areas of your life, set it as your main and definite purpose. It can be a defined purpose for one year; it can be a defined main purpose for 10 years, but it must be your main and definite purpose. If someone were to wake you up at 3 in the morning and ask you, “What is your main defined purpose in life?” you should be able to tell them without even thinking. The fact that you don’t select a main defined purpose and don’t make plans to achieve it leads to lack of goals, drifting, unhappiness, confusion, and low self-esteem. Remember, your main defined purpose must be measurable. You can have a variety of different goals, but your main and definite purpose, your number one goal, must be measurable. You must be able to quantify it. There’s a beautiful line that says what gets measured gets done, and if you can’t measure your goal, then it probably isn’t an ideal goal for an important and defined purpose. For example, you could have the goal of being happy, but that couldn’t be your main defined purpose. You could have a goal to lose weight.

Setting Measurable Goals

And that is a measurable goal you can have, a goal to increase revenue, and that is a measurable goal. So, make sure your goals are measurable. Make sure your goals are challenging. Each of your goals should be something beyond what you have achieved. You see, it’s the goals that keep us out of the comfort zone. It’s the goals that prevent us from falling into a routine. It’s the goals that ensure we keep growing and expanding our capabilities in life.

Knowing Why You Want to Achieve Your Goals

Number 4: You must know why you want to achieve your goal. How will you personally benefit from it? Why do you want it in the first place? We found that if there is one or two reasons for achieving a goal, you’ll have a little motivation. If you have 5 or 10 reasons, you’ll have more motivation. But if you have 50 reasons to achieve a particular goal, you’ll have so much motivation that nothing can stop you. Jim Rohn puts it nicely. He said, “People don’t lack goals; what they lack is reasons.” And we’ve seen it time and time again. Everyone wants to be rich, but if you ask why they want to be rich, most people have no idea. Most people say if they were rich, they could stop working. Of course, that’s why they never get rich. Here’s a key phrase: reasons make the difference in how your life works. The gentleman said, “If you have enough reasons, you can do the most incredible things that can overcome the toughest day. You can overcome the most incredible challenges if you have enough reasons. If you don’t have a list of your goals, it’s probably because you don’t have enough reasons.”

Finding Your Main Purpose

Point number 5 is, if you don’t have a defined main purpose, make it your number one goal to find your main purpose. To find your main purpose and define it, 95% of the population has no idea what their life’s central purpose is. If you start and you don’t have a defined purpose, don’t worry about it. It means you’re exactly like everyone else. But set what your main goal will be to find it and keep persisting. Keep thinking, keep reflecting, keep reviewing what that could be your greatest defined purpose, and I promise you’ll find it. And when you find it, it’s like your whole life goes into high gear. Make discovering what you should be doing the most important goal of your life.

Taking Daily Action Towards Your Goals

Point number 6 is to do something extra every day to move towards your most important goals. Remember that daily progress increases self-esteem and self-confidence. The real winning feeling comes from that sense that we are progressing every day towards achieving something that is important to us. Point number 7 is to remember that goal-setting is the process of moving from where you are to where you want to be. It’s simple, straightforward, and effective. The more you practice setting clear goals, the better you will become. When you become an expert in setting goals and making plans, your success will be assured. Consider a goal like a blueprint. Even a master builder or the best craftsman you can find with the best materials or the best plot in the city couldn’t build you a good house without a plan. But even an average craftsman, if they had a good enough plan, could build you.

Building a Great Life with Goals

Even if you’re an extremely intelligent, capable, and talented human being, without a goal, you won’t be able to build a great life. As I said before, you’ll have to spend the rest of your life working for people who have clear and specific goals and plans.

Remember, a goal-centered life is a source of energy and enthusiasm. It’s not possible to be motivated without goals. Occasionally, I’m on radio programs, and people call in asking me how they can motivate themselves, and I say, “What are your goals?” And they say, “I don’t know.” Well, that’s why you’re not motivated. You see, we’re always motivated when there’s something we want badly enough. You could take the laziest, dumbest, most unmotivated human being you’ve ever seen, the most demotivated creature you can imagine, and take them about 50 meters from the shore in a lake, throw them out of a boat, put your hand on their head, and hold them underwater. I guarantee you, in a few seconds, you’ll see the most excited, enthusiastic, and motivated person you can imagine. Why? Because finally, there’s something the individual wants badly enough. And when there’s something you desire with all your might, you’ll have the excitement, motivation, enthusiasm, and energy to drive you to achieve it. Every step you take towards your goal gives you a sense of accomplishment. It’s that winning feeling that boosts your self-esteem and improves your performance.

The Power of Progress

This is why all winners focus on goals. Because every time you take a step towards achieving something that’s important to you, you’ll feel like a winner. Every time you feel like a winner, your self-esteem goes up. Every time your self-esteem goes up, you like yourself more. You feel energy and enthusiasm that propels you to try more things, to attempt other things, to reach for more goals that are possible for you. Imagine you’re like a steam engine, fueled by the fire in the furnace. The more goals you have, the more excited, positive, and motivated you’ll become. Remember, happiness is the progressive realization of a worthy goal. It’s the key to a positive mental attitude. In my opinion, most of the unhappiness in our society comes from people who don’t know where they’re going.

But if you force yourself to think about what you want for just 21 days, the same time it takes a chicken to hatch an egg, if you force yourself to think about it for just 21 days, you’ll establish a new pattern of positive habit that will accompany you for the rest of your life. In fact, it can change your personality from whatever it is to being a positive, optimistic, joyful, excited, motivated, and enthusiastic person just by continually thinking about your goals for 21 days. The surest way to overcome the fears of failure, doubt, and lack of confidence is to make daily progress towards your major goals. Remember, confidence is making daily progress towards your major goals. Remember, nothing succeeds like success.

Making Success a Habit

We all fear failure. We all fear risk or loss. But we have to get used to facing those fears of failure and moving forward. And even a small step minimizes the feeling of failure and increases the feeling of excitement. Nothing succeeds like success. That’s why successful people are those who make success a habit. They come from the same background of limitation and underachievement as everyone else. But then they make a habit of being successful. Then it gets to the point where no matter what happens in their external world, whether their businesses fail or the economy changes or they lose all their money, once they’ve made the mental habit of being successful, they can always repeat it. Their most important task is to learn to set and achieve a major goal. Now, this is vitally important. If you stop and determine your main defined purpose, make a plan to achieve it, and then get to work to achieve that single goal, what you need is a major achievement, something that’s really important to you. Once you’ve done that, your subconscious mind will accept this success as a pattern, a habit of success, and you’ll have programmed yourself to repeat it.

This is why successful people go from one success to another. They’ve programmed their subconscious mind with a pattern, and then the subconscious drives them almost effortlessly. Your subconscious will work to make your words and actions fit a pattern consistent with your previous success. That’s why nothing succeeds like success. This is the key. Learn to establish a habit of success, which can only be achieved by reaching challenging and valuable goals. With all these points, you’ll set your goals and objectives. Have confidence in yourself. Remember that success is learning all this was done with great effort. Leave us a comment. Don’t forget to subscribe, and please like if you enjoyed it. Thank you, and until next time.
